Rhodes Days
According to legend when Zeus was handing out land to the gods, Helios, the god of the Sun, was off riding his carriage on celestial business. Upon his return Zeus asked him which piece of land he would want to rule over. Helios requested a newly formed island that had just appeared from the sea. They named the island after the nymph Rodhe, the current love connection of the sun god. And sunny the island is! Summer may not have taken over Europe yet but in Rhodes it's in full swing. Cruise ships, ferries and planes offload a multinational mix of tourists, locals hurry around to prepare to enchant them in various ways, even nature is fully alert and peaking through the nooks and crannies of the Old Town to add a spice of colour and a tender touch to the monotone stone walls. Speaking of nature - bougainvilleas here are the size of buildings, geraniums and basil are fully grown bushes, oleanders are full-size trees. It seems like not only gods and mankind like the island of the sun god.
In more recent days, Rhodes was a home town to the Knights of the Order of St.John, more on those in Rhodes (K)nights
