SYMI
Symi is one of those locations so picturesque that words don't do it justice. A mere 58 square kilometres in size, inhabited by some 2000 people, the island is home to colourful neoclassical buildings inspired by the architecture of Smyrna (Izmir), Italy, France and England. Bright warm colours are complemented by blue-painted accents, blooming oleanders and cascading bougainvilleas. Turquoise waters sparkle around tempting you to jump in for a swim - not a bad idea at all given the season's temperatures. Carefully arranged gift shops await with your usual assortment of souvenirs and sea sponges but if shopping is not your thing or souvenirs have started looking alike from too much island hopping, a tavern or a sweet bakery is always around the corner for a rest.
Note to sea wolves of all kinds: if you tend to get nauseous, take the big ferry and not a speedboat. Alternatively, stock up on some ginger tablets from a local Greek pharmacy - they do wonders for motion sickness and for some mysterious reason are widely available in the area.
