Liberation Day
This year Zlatograd celebrated the Bulgarian national holiday with its very own competition for the most authentic national attire and weaponry. The most dangerous of swords and pistols circled the Ethnographic Complex showcased by freedom fighters of all ages. Skillfully sewn dresses and handmade accessories gave an extra dose of colour and pizazz to the cloudy day. National songs and dances echoed through town together with gun shots loud and sudden enough to scare everyone but the local cats that are so used to the celebrations that barely opened a curious eye during their nap. And of course, what would a celebration be without grilled meatballs and an all-encompassing, all-inclusive “horo” dance to join participants and viewers in a bouncy mingle of smiles. Smoke-covered Zlatograd celebrated long and the smell of gunpowder and meatballs covered the Old Town for the better part of the day. So what are you waiting for? Your next Liberation Day destination is waiting for you.
