Corpus Christi
Although not as big as the Easter procession, the Corpus Christi one in Seville is still a major event. The fresh rosemary aroma fills the air and mixes with the chatter of the spectators as different brotherhoods glide through the streets with their banners and saints. The city is decorated to celebrate in red velvet and gold. Beautifully crafted street altars adorn passages, shop windows and corners. Everyone is dressed in full formal attire despite the 40+ degree heat and the procession participants do not seem to be breaking even a drop of sweat. I am convinced they are a different species which does not feel the heat the same way normal humans do. My eyes kept wandering to the nearby residents who chose to watch the procession from their terraces. The quick access to water and air conditioning must have been really handy. As impressive as the full procession and the city decoration was, the post procession vibe of the whole community coming together in tiny corners, bars and cafés to chat and mingle, was my favourite part. After all, who can resist the idea of a beer, a fruity wine or the tastiest fresh orange juice in June?
