Corfu's Old Town
If you've ever travelled to Greece you will undoubtedly have a certain image in your mind of typical Greek towns and villages. Whatever you're expecting, Corfu is not that. In fact, if you were dropped in the middle of the Old Town blindfolded and didn't know where you were, you would be much more likely to guess you're in Italy than in Greece. The Venetian heritage buildings, the window blinds, the attention to little charming details, the motorbikes, even the laundry hanging from the windows and across the streets, it all screams Italy. But let's say somehow you find out you are somewhere else. You start looking for clues - most locals speak English without an accent, so that's no help. Most people the locals speak to are foreigners, so that doesn't help either, no native tongue to be heard. English, German, some French, Dutch, some Northern European influences ... oh wait, there is a cruise ship docked, that explains it. Then you notice the food and finally some clues appear - in between the burgers, pizza and gelatos, you stumble upon a souvlaki, a feta cheese pie and there you have it - a Greek salad. And although it may have taken you forever to guess where you are, the vibrant architectural variety left over by the multicultural inhabitants of the island over the years give Corfu a distinctive mark which you will not forget.
