Beijing Road
You never quite realise how old things can get until you travel to China. Beijing Road, Guangzhou's central pedestrian shopping street, dates back to 214 BCE - that is more than 2200 years of archeological layers on top of each other, some visible through glass floors, that you walk on together with the densely packed multitudes of locals and tourists. Throughout all this time Beijing Road has always been an active commercial area so you get a very live and current mix of shops and eateries that in one little corner of a tiny street give way to, of course, a thousand-year-old temple complex. It's an ancient, eclectic mix of styles and moods. How about your local neighbourhood shopping street? Got anything as old?
