Bari Vecchia - certified fresh
If low cost airlines are good at anything that's making you discover places you never quite thought about as tourist destinations. Hidden away from the fame and glory of the major Italian crowd-pleasers, Bari remains more of a ferry transit harbour or a car pick-up point to discover Puglia. It does, however, have its own merits such as the Old Town. Fresh pasta and fresh laundry take turns to decorate the tightly wound streets together with multitudes of light strings. Vendors sell their produce at their home's doorstep and despite the seasonal closures you will not remain hungry as there are always a place or two open to take a bite. And the best part? It's all fresh! Not only the food and the pasta, the streets carry the lingering aroma of fresh laundry detergent, so much so I started wondering if there is a particular regionally mandated detergent brand which everyone uses. Go on, give Bari a shot - it's cheap, it's tasty, it's friendly, it's fresh!
